1992: European Championship in Sweden

The 1992's European Championship was held in Sweden.

As usual, the whole competition was divided in two phases: the first one was a qualifying phase involving 33 teams and the second phase was a final tournament with the eight qualified teams.

The participants were divided into 7 groups with the winning teams qualified for the final phase.

The games were playing during the fall of Soviet Union and all the eastern european communist governments. As consequence, the newly born Commonwealth of Independent States (CSI) inherited the Soviet Union spot in the final tournament as an unified team of the new born indipendent countries.

West Germany and East Germany were drawn in the same group, but the two Germany were finally reunited after the draw for the qualifiers. East Germany retired and the new german national team made their first appearance.

At the same time, Yugoslavia, although winning their qualifying group, was banned from the final tournament following the sanctions adopted by the UN.
It was Denmark to take their place at the European Championship 1992 in Sweden.

In group A, the final match between Albania and Spain was cancelled following the political and social crisis in Albania.

Following the revolutionary political events of the period, eastern countries like Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia shortly disappeared leaving their place to a number of newly formed national States.

1992's Championship was also the first edition with the participation of Faroe Island and San Marino.

CSI, England, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France and Scotland entered the final phase of the European Championship 1992 in Sweden. Sweden entered as hosting country.
